District honors teachers and students at board meeting; Sheila Joy Scholarship awarded

Peoria Public Schools used its regular board meeting to recognize teachers, students and community partners.
The board presented the Remarkable Spirit Award to Amanda Lear Matas for leadership in expanding Algebra I access. The Sheila Joy Scholarship—funded through donations and matching funds and managed by the Peoria Public Schools Foundation—was awarded to Arianna Butler, a Peoria Grow Your Own candidate who received childcare, transportation and stipends as part of the program. Presenters said Kathleen Rising raised over $50,000 to sustain the scholarship.
Students were also recognized: Young Authors winners from grades 5–8 introduced themselves and their manuscript titles onstage. The board suggested including story summaries or readings at a future meeting.
Several teachers and staff received meritorious service and teacher‑of‑the‑year recognitions, and the superintendent highlighted district efforts such as increasing access to Algebra I and improving teacher recruitment and retention.
The district also recognized the Advantage Communications speech and debate program; two students testified that the program helped them academically and socially and urged the board to continue funding and summer offerings.
