Police leadership told the Village of Huntley Police Commission on Oct. 2 that the department is operating with two sworn vacancies and may face a third opening by the end of the year, prompting the Commission to authorize a lateral recruitment process.
Police Chief Linda Hooten reported the vacancies stem from recent retirements and promotions. Director of Human Resources Chrissy Hoover said there is potential for a third vacancy by year-end. Chief Hooten also said one sergeant may be deployed and another will be on a 2–4 month leave of absence, a combination that would stretch department resources.
Director Hoover and Chief Hooten discussed possible adjustments to the lateral recruitment process, including removing or modifying preference points and keeping an open eligibility list. Commissioner Dan Maloney asked about military preference points and the role of a bachelor’s degree in lateral hires; Director Hoover and Chief Hooten said such factors would still be considered as part of the overall candidate evaluation even if preference-point policies change.
The Commission voted unanimously to begin the lateral recruitment process; Chairman Jim Burgess volunteered to participate in interviews. Director Hoover also said a draft of proposed amendments to the Rules and Regulations will be prepared after attorney review and circulated to Commissioners for input.
Next steps include Human Resources posting the recruitment timeline and proceeding with interviews; the Commission expects updates at a future meeting.
