Council alerted to YMCA youth‑center service reduction; lease amendment to be discussed

Mayor Anthony Wright told the council on March 9 that the local YMCA informed the city the youth center is effectively closed except for limited counseling and youth housing services while it pursues grants and donations.
Wright said the YMCA reported it did not receive expected funding for an Auburn branch and historically relies on a county grant program (described in the meeting as a mental illness/drug diversion program grant). Because the lease requires operation of a youth center, the administration will meet with the YMCA branch manager to discuss amending the lease to reflect current services and bring recommended lease changes back to council.
Mayor Wright warned council this may become a budget question for 2027: if the YMCA is unable to restore youth‑center services, the council may need to decide in the 2027 budget process whether to continue allowing the office space to be leased at no charge for those services or to pursue a different use of the space.
No formal action was taken at the March 9 meeting; staff committed to follow up with the YMCA and return any proposed lease amendments or budget options to council.
