Decorah — The City Council unanimously approved a lease agreement that allows Northeast Iowa Montessori School to develop a playground and related outdoor educational improvements on a small portion of city land adjacent to the school.
Travis (staff member) told the council the five-year lease would begin June 1, 2026, automatically renew for one‑year terms unless terminated, and is structured as an exchange of maintenance and public access rather than as monetary rent. "Northeast Iowa Montessori will provide public access to the playground and associated facilities, including that green space, during times when school's not in session," Travis said.
Council members praised the partnership as a low‑cost way to expand recreational opportunities and educational resources. One councilor said the arrangement converts underused land into an asset without cost to taxpayers and noted the school is responsible for maintenance, improvements and liability insurance.
The motion to approve the lease was moved and seconded and passed by unanimous roll call. Staff noted the agreement includes city approval of improvements and a termination clause should the land be needed for an essential city purpose.
Next steps: The lease takes effect June 1, 2026; the school will begin planning improvements subject to city approval.
