Mark Stanton, West Columbia's director of operations, told the City Council that the sanitation department will move from pandemic-era split crews back to a five-day, eight-hour work schedule beginning the week of April 27. The change restores a Monday–Thursday route cadence with Friday used for yard trash catch-up, special projects and fleet maintenance.
Stanton said the change is intended to cut overtime and improve the city's ability to maintain weekly household garbage and yard-trash pickup; recycling will continue on an every-other-week schedule on the same weekday. “This will better serve our residents of West Columbia and cut back on our overtime,” Stanton said.
City staff will notify residents through postcards, the WeCo app, social media and printed flyers the week before routes change; Stanton said staff will also distribute maps showing which areas are affected and will monitor collections closely during the transition. A council member urged leniency during the first weeks to avoid trash sitting at the curb when residents miss notices; Stanton said crews will monitor daily and adjust as needed.
The council did not vote on this item; it was presented for the city's informational and operational decision-making.
