EDC hears preliminary plans for Old Traubber site; village, school district and public weigh process

The Economic Development Commission received a preliminary briefing on possible redevelopment of the Old Traubber school site and a summary of public concern about potential rental conversion.
Staff said a developer responded to a school-district RFP and the village has discussed potentially purchasing the property and relaying it to the developer, but emphasized that the concept is very preliminary and that any proposal will require plan-commission and village-board approvals. "There will be plans presented to the plan commission, and then the village board, well before anything is a done deal," staff said.
Commissioners and members of the public raised questions about the property's history (previous uses included the Y and a senior center), affordability and whether rentals would predominate. A village-board member who spoke during the public forum said the district's RFP produced a single response: "The school district put out an RFP. There was one response to that RFP. That response is who we're talking to," the board member said.
No unit counts, site plans or final entitlements were presented. Staff reiterated that the review process (public hearings, plan commission and village board consideration) will determine the scope, uses and any required mitigation; commissioners said they want to remain involved as the process advances and encouraged staff to share updates as formal proposals are submitted.
