Fire chief proposes up-to-$12,000 reimbursement incentive to speed firefighter recruitment

Fire Chief Dan Meyer presented a recruitment incentive proposal aimed at accelerating hiring and bringing experienced firefighters onto the Macomb Fire Department.

Meyer proposed reimbursing other fire departments for the cost of initial fire-academy training for candidates who sign a callback or employment agreement with Macomb, capped at $12,000 per individual. He said the reimbursement would be paid to the sending department (not to the individual), come from his department’s training line item and would only apply to candidates who completed an accredited academy and are in good standing. Meyer said the policy could be prorated if sending departments contractually require repayment; for example, a longer tenure could reduce any payback obligation.

Supporters on the committee, including Alderman Vazquezi, said the idea is consistent with similar police recruitment incentives and could attract candidates with experience while reducing the time to full deployment. Meyer said a standard training academy is about 10 weeks and that a reimbursed candidate could be operational more quickly than a new recruit who must attend a fresh academy.

The chair said the administration supports using this as another recruitment tool and will place the proposal on next Monday’s council agenda for formal action. No formal adoption occurred at the committee meeting.

Next step: staff will prepare the item for council action, including details on funding, prorating of repayment obligations and eligibility criteria.
