The Southfield Planning Commission voted Aug. 27 to send a favorable recommendation to City Council for SLU25-0006, a special land use application from Allegra Printing to operate a reproduction/duplicating facility at 24471 West 10 Mile Road.
Planning staff recommended approval, saying the proposed interior printing operation fits within the site’s office-service (OS) zoning and is unlikely to cause noise, dust or traffic problems. “Unlikely to cause any nuisances as it's an entirely interior operation,” planning staff stated during the presentation. The recommendation noted the tenant occupies an existing multi-tenant building and that the proposal is consistent with the city's future-land-use plan.
Applicant John Carlo identified himself for the record as the owner of Allegra Printing at the 10 Mile address and told commissioners the business relocated from a 12 Mile location after a new car wash prompted the move. “It was much bigger. It fit all of our needs,” Carlo said, adding that in the move they missed that the new location required a special land use and are seeking to rectify that.
Commissioners asked brief operational questions (for example, whether Allegra performs work for local lending or program directories); Carlo confirmed the business does some small-document work and directories. After the planning department’s formal recommendation, Commissioner Goodwin Dye moved to approve the recommendation; the chair recorded the motion as supported and the commission adopted the favorable recommendation by voice vote. The chair said the matter will now proceed to City Council for final action.
No members of the public spoke during the item’s public hearing.
The commission’s recommendation is advisory; the final approval for the special land use will be decided by City Council at a future council meeting.
