Urbana board approves updated TCI social studies curriculum for middle school

The Urbana School District 116 board on Monday approved purchase of an updated online social studies curriculum (TCI) for grades 6–8, voting to allow staff to begin implementation and teacher training over the summer.
Jessica Bradford, who led the middle‑school presentation, described the updated TCI product as an online, standards‑aligned package with teacher and student access, built‑in differentiation and embedded civics content for seventh grade. Bradford said the district would receive online teacher access, student access, free initial professional development and 100 hard‑copy student books as part of the package.
"This curriculum...it's online, it's updated to Illinois mandates, [and] teachers can give assessments online and the data is automatically populated," Bradford said during the presentation.
Board members asked about cost and timing. Staff presented a three‑year price of $69,000 covering the product, PD, and materials. The board treated the procurement as an action item rather than waiting until August so teachers could access the platform and prepare for fall implementation.
A motion to acquire the new social studies curriculum was moved, seconded and approved by roll call. The board also approved related fiscal items on the consent agenda earlier in the meeting, and staff said vendor training and ongoing check‑ins are included in the contract.
The board’s approval allows the district to start summer PD and to make instructional materials available to teachers and students before the new year.
