Montclair Police propose optional pink ribbon patch and undershirts for October

A Montclair Police Department representative told the council the department seeks to authorize optional pink undershirts and a temporary patch bearing a pink ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness Month from Oct. 1–31.
The department said it would partner again with Loma Linda University Medical Center, a 501(c)(3), to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and research, and that employees who choose to participate would make a minimum donation (staff cited $30) to take part; the program, staff said, would not cost the city.
During questions, council members asked how the patch is affixed to uniforms. The police representative explained members who choose to add the patch typically take one older uniform to a tailor or dry cleaner and have the patch sewn on at the officer’s expense. The representative added that when uniforms are retired the agency removes insignia and retains the fabric and patches rather than disposing of them with insignia intact.
Council members and the mayor complimented the department’s proposal as a visible, optional way to support awareness and early detection messaging.
What happens next: The council received the communication and asked no further action during the meeting; implementation details (participation process and donation collection) will be handled by the department if the program moves forward.
