County clerk says quick coordination with Bloomington kept directional signs outside Showers Building

The Monroe County clerk told the election board on April 9 that rapid coordination with City of Bloomington staff resolved a dispute over candidate and directional signs outside the Showers Building.

The clerk said the county's election supervisor was contacted on Tuesday by a city staff member, identified in the meeting as Adam Wasson, about candidate signs on city property. County staff, city staff and both county and city attorneys met, and a city resolution passed the same evening that allowed the directional signs to remain outside the Showers Building.

"I want to thank Mr. Adam Wasson. He was incredibly instrumental, in meeting with us so expeditiously," the clerk said. The clerk added that legal staff on both sides "encouraged us to keep calm" while the resolution moved through city processes and that "the kerfuffle lasted less than 24 hours." The clerk said no significant harm to candidate signage was apparent.

Board members and staff said the retained directional signs help direct voters to early-voting locations and benefit both city and county operations.

The board did not take further action beyond noting the coordination and thanking those involved.
