Dr. Lindsey, who facilitated the committee, said the committee weighed calendar balance, attendance patterns and stakeholder input. “Of the 2,868 responses, 48% of our community selected option 2,” Dr. Lindsey said, noting that administrators and certified staff favored the full‑week options at higher rates. The presentation included an analysis of August temperatures and trade‑offs: pushing a start date later to avoid heat would push the school year into June, affecting graduation and state testing timelines.
Board concerns and supports: Trustees voiced appreciation for committee work and asked staff to ensure supports for families who rely on school meals and childcare during longer breaks; staff noted existing nutrition and community partnerships and said mascot/camp offerings could expand during longer breaks if demand rises. Several trustees questioned balance between semesters and reiterated the need to monitor impacts on families, attendance, and staffing.
Next steps: Cabinet supports the committee recommendation; staff said the item will return for the board’s second read/approval and that outreach to schools and community partners will continue to address childcare and meal needs during extended breaks.
