District reports $1.21 million in Evidence-Based Funding; administration recommends awarding transportation contract to Illinois Central

At the March 5 board meeting, Executive Director of Business and Operations Karen Apostoli reported the district had received $1,209,173 in Evidence-Based Funding since the previous meeting and briefed the board on the transportation re-bid process required by Illinois law.
Apostoli said a mandatory pre-bid meeting was held Jan. 28, 2026, and bids were opened Feb. 11. Vendors attending the pre-bid meeting included First Student, Yellow Bus Group, Illinois Central, Xtra Care Transportation and Safeway Transportation. Administration recommended awarding the contract to Illinois Central for school years 2026–27 through 2028–29 but told the board it would gather additional answers to follow-up questions and return with a recommendation and vote at the March 19 meeting.
Apostoli also presented bid information and a recommendation to award a contract to the lowest qualified bidder for fire alarm upgrades at Currier and Wegner elementary schools; that award will also be considered March 19. The board reviewed vendor and pricing information but took no award votes on March 5.
The finance briefing included an update on proposed foundation grant funds to purchase GagaBall pits and vendor information on payments/invoicing (recorded in the packet as "Hearthland (My Invoicing System School Bucks)"). Board members indicated additional clarifying information would be necessary before award votes.
