Commission approves facade renovations and safety fixes for 59 North Jefferson

Mike Kirsch, representing the owners of 59 North Jefferson Street, presented facade-only renovations for the property commonly known as the Born Auburn Coffee / Law Office building. Kirsch described plans to replace dated trim, install energy-efficient windows similar to ones used on the nearby theater, use tumbled cut limestone below the windows, and relocate an existing blade sign from Main Street to the building’s corner on North Jefferson.
"We're doing the renovations basically to give a general uplift to the building," Kirsch said, noting the project aims to address dated shakes and trim and to remove a long-standing trip hazard at the doorway by reworking the concrete threshold.
Kirsch said the proposed metal standing-seam roofing detail and simulated divided lights on the windows are intended to blend with neighboring downtown storefronts; the facade color will be a dark charcoal tone designed to resist sun fade. Commissioners praised the renderings and asked that the sign, if relocated, be hung at a minimum of 8 feet over the sidewalk. The application was approved by motion and voice vote.
The commission recorded approval of docket PC26007 and thanked the applicant’s representative.
