Recreation Superintendent Kelly Willitson presented a recap of the Central Plaza Ice Loop on April 7, saying the inaugural season exceeded attendance and rental projections and outlining lessons learned for safety, maintenance and programming.
Willitson said the ice loop opened with the holiday season and operated 36 of 47 scheduled days. She reported 4,792 skate rentals, average daily admissions of about 153 (versus an expected 100) and 5,515 total admissions for skating days. Placer AI analysis cited during the presentation showed 785,000 visits to the Uptown block (for at least 10 minutes) between the grand opening and the season’s end, with 197,800 unique visitors.
Staff highlighted operational challenges and follow-ups: the ice resurfacer was down for two days, prompting a plan to train public works mechanics to reduce dependence on outside technicians; a single staff injury was reported and there were no user injuries; staff will update personal protective equipment policy and revise communications and contingency plans for weather and snow storage.
Willitson outlined next steps including expanded programming, partnerships (for example with the Cedar Rapids Roughriders for learn-to-skate programs), continuing business partnerships, and a May 22 target to activate the central water feature (weather permitting). Council praised the season’s success and asked staff to return with action items during budgeting.
