At the start of the public-comment period, classified staff raised concerns about consultant-produced updates to district job descriptions, urging the board to review the work and press the consultant for revisions.
Elizabeth Escada, who identified herself as the Calexico chapter 399 president, told trustees the district paid Ewing Consulting to update classified job descriptions to match staff duties but that most revised descriptions "look exactly the same like the old descriptions" and in some cases are "more vague than before." "We feel like Ewing just copied and pasted the same descriptions, added an ability to, and called it a day," Escada said, urging the board to demand better work so employees can be fairly classified and compensated.
Judith Lopez, chapter 399 chief negotiator, spoke immediately after Escada and said the union was prepared to negotiate in good faith. The board heard those comments during the public comment period and later, during the agenda, tabled Item 22 (adoption of revised classified job descriptions and updated job titles) for additional review at a subsequent meeting.
Board action and context: Trustees did not take final action on adopting revised classified job descriptions at tonights meeting; they voted to table Item 22 to allow time for review. The transcript shows the board and staff acknowledged the concerns and asked for further examination of the materials before a formal vote.
What happens next: Staff and the board will review the consultants work and Item 22 will return to the board for consideration in a later meeting. Members of the classified bargaining unit requested that the district require the consultant to incorporate staff input and reflect actual duties to avoid underclassification and lost pay.
