The Community High School District 218 Board of Education on Oct. 16 voted to direct the administration to prepare the 2025 property tax levy, approved a package of interfund transfers that move funds into the capital projects fund, and awarded bid 1514 for band uniforms for Allen B. Shepherd High School.
The board opened the meeting, confirmed a quorum and approved the consent agenda, which included approval of the minutes (the minutes referenced as 09/19/2024 were corrected in discussion to 09/19/2025), superintendent goals for 2025–26, routine payments for CHSD 218 and personnel recommendations listed as Personnel list 2025-10. The motion to approve the consent agenda passed on a recorded roll call with affirmative responses from members recorded as Steve, Tom, Carol, Sheila, Candace and Jennifer.
Board members then voted to approve the Nov. 10, 2025 Institute Day and to direct the administration to prepare and present an estimated 2025 property tax levy. No levy amount was discussed at the meeting; the board established only the direction to prepare the proposed levy for later presentation.
The board adopted a resolution authorizing a permanent interfund transfer from the education fund to the capital projects fund and a separate abatement and transfer of the district’s working cash fund to the operations and maintenance fund with provision for transfer to the capital projects fund. Board discussion referenced capital projects already under way (see separate construction update). The resolutions were moved and seconded and passed by recorded roll call.
On a separate action, the board awarded bid 1514 for band uniforms to serve Allen B. Shepherd High School. Members examined the uniforms and discussed the design, which one presenter said includes three bars representing the Gemini, Mercury and Apollo missions. During the informal exchange a speaker used an offensive racial word; the transcript records the language but meeting discussion immediately returned to the formal vote. The award motion passed on roll call.
Following the votes the board approved a motion to go into closed session to discuss personnel matters, pending or probable litigation and collective bargaining matters; the chair stated there would be no action during closed session and the motion passed.
Next steps: administration was directed to prepare the levy presentation for a future meeting and to proceed with the transfers and contract award as recorded. Any specific levy figures, dollar amounts for transfers and contract amounts were not provided at the meeting and remain "not specified."
