Selectmen open personnel policy review after firefighters raise concerns about PTO accrual

"I think they have a very legitimate point that they should be getting 12 hours, not 10 hours," a committee member said, explaining that a single 12‑hour shift is not fully covered by 10 hours of sick leave. Members discussed that department‑specific policies (police, fire) might supersede the town handbook and agreed it would be appropriate to invite rank‑and‑file officers—not only chiefs—to provide input.
The board debated how to handle department procedures that appear on the front of the personnel book and whether the master handbook should be amended to include clear language and department addenda. A member recommended reviewing policies with each of the primary departments and then returning to the board with suggested clarifications or amendments.
What’s next: staff will gather hard copies of current policies, invite frontline police and fire personnel to comment, and bring proposed clarifications or amendments back to the board for approval.
