Independent consultant Kathleen Hellawa appeared to the Glenrock Board of Education on March 12 and described a locally tailored search approach that centers on stakeholder input, vetting by reputation and data, and post‑hire transition workshops.
Hellawa said she prioritizes listening sessions, anonymous online surveys and in‑person stakeholder meetings to draft a candidate profile specific to the district. "I transcribe verbatim, and all of those results go into a report for the board," she said, and noted the board should keep input confidential during active recruitment to avoid candidates tailoring answers to published priorities.
On vetting, Hellawa described checks of reputation, district performance reports and internet searches, and she said she works with district counsel to ensure ad language meets recent statutory changes (including requirements to include salary ranges in ads). She also offers optional transition workshops to establish communication norms and goals after a hire.
Hellawa said compressed timelines (interviews in May and negotiations in June) can work if the board prioritizes intensive scheduling, but she echoed other presenters in urging that the right candidate, not the calendar, guide the pace. The board thanked Hellawa and said it would compare her materials and references against the other firms' proposals before deciding how to proceed.
