Board rejects Elizabeth Haddon addition bids, moves to negotiate; district staff report multiple construction updates

Jeff Pogg of Land Associates (self-identified during the meeting) told the board that Hatton addition bids and other submissions came in over budget and that the recommendation is to reject those bids and begin negotiations with the contractors. “We are going to enter negotiations with the contractors,” he said, and the board discussed meeting again with enough members present to take action on negotiated terms (members tentatively targeted April 7 for a follow-up meeting).
Pogg also described a strategy to bid the Hopkins Gym and the new Tatum addition together to create economies of scale; he estimated the combined work’s total value would be “around $13,000,000.”
A Colliers representative reporting for Rich Brown said the middle-school auditorium is about 85% complete, with mechanical, plumbing and electrical nearly finished; stage-floor work was scheduled to start in early April and seating installation was targeted for mid-April. Colliers also reported the 1890s-building interior alterations are roughly 20% complete and that asbestos abatement work was finished, allowing demolition to resume.
The board’s business-and-finance agenda later included routine contract approvals and the formal rejection of bids for the Elizabeth Hadden addition on the consent agenda. Staff said other contract awards included a nurses-suite and classroom alteration contract (award recorded in the meeting materials), a Hopkins facilities improvement award and contracts for field turf and scoreboard installation; the transcript lists those items on the business agenda for approval.
Next steps: staff will begin negotiations with bidders on the rebid/rejected items, prepare negotiated terms for board consideration at the targeted April 7 follow-up meeting, and continue to provide construction progress reports.
