Springfield Township board delays decision on proposed Share Alliance food pantry

The Springfield Township Board of Adjustment on the record heard testimony and public comment on a D(1) use variance for a proposed Share Alliance food pantry and voted to carry the application to the Sept. 16 meeting to allow the applicant to produce a written operations plan.
Licensed professional planner Robert Hudak, sworn for testimony, told the board he had inspected the site and reviewed reports and local ordinances. “I’m a licensed professional planner in the state of New Jersey,” Hudak said, and argued that the pantry falls within a narrow class of uses courts have deemed inherently beneficial, citing Medici and related case law. He said the project is partnering with the Community Food Bank in Union County and that the proposal advances the general welfare.
