Nome Public Schools board approves first readings of policy package, extends contract and OKs early graduation

Vice President/Clerk Marjorie Kunaq Tahbone called the Nome Public Schools Board of Education to order at 5:31 p.m. on Sept. 9 and the board moved through several routine and action items.
The board approved on a roll-call vote a first reading of an extensive package of district policies, including BP 4180/4280/4380, BP 5111, BP 5138, BP 6151, BP 4161/4261/4361, BP 5123 and a series of BP 10010–10090 policies. Member Jon Gregg made the motion; the minutes record Darlene Trigg as excused and Members Tahbone, Gregg, Mendenhall and Tapqaq voting yes.
The board also approved several distinct action items. Member Nancy Mendenhall moved and the board approved Neva Horton’s request for early graduation. Member Jon Gregg moved to extend Fremontii LLC’s contract to serve as owner representative for the Beltz re‑roof project through Oct. 31, 2025, with a maximum compensation of $43,000; the motion carried by roll call as recorded. Member Mendenhall moved to adopt the revised NBMHS Student Handbook for the 2025–2026 school year; that motion also carried.
Superintendent Jamie Burgess provided her written report (attached to the official minutes) and noted staff participation in upcoming external meetings; Chief Financial Officer Genevieve Hollins presented the district finance report. Assistant Superintendent and HR Manager Elizabeth Korenek‑Johnson told the board that two international teachers started work on Aug. 25 and three more were expected later that week, that the calendar‑committee survey had been distributed and that professional boundaries training for staff is scheduled for Sept. 24 at the NES library.
The board’s actions were routine votes recorded in the meeting minutes; no contested or split votes are recorded for the main motions reported. The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 14, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. in the NES Library/Zoom. The meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
