District hears Parent‑Teacher Advisory handbook review and multilingual services update; students recognized for CERT and robotics work

At its Jan. 20 meeting, the Joliet Township High School District 204 board received presentations from the Parent‑Teacher Advisory and district staff on student handbook recommendations and multilingual services.
Dr. Brett Marcum, assistant principal at Joliet West, and Mr. Steve Locke, assistant principal at Joliet Central, presented the Parent‑Teacher Advisory's recommendations and a review of student discipline and handbook language for board consideration. District staff indicated these recommendations will inform recommended handbook changes presented for first reading later in the agenda.
Mr. Edgar Palacios, Director of Multilingual Services, and Mrs. Susi Montano, Curriculum Director for English, provided an update on Strategy 2.2 in the district’s Multilingual Services program, summarizing recent activities and program direction. Dr. Guseman also shared the Winter Credit Recovery report and thanked volunteers and staff for recent events including a ribbon cutting at Joliet West and participation in MLK Day events.
The board recognized dozens of students for completing Joliet CERT training at Central and West campuses and named District Electronics & Robotics students who restored two Joliet Fire Department robots, listing students by campus and project.
Next steps include district staff incorporating the advisory's recommendations into handbook edits for follow‑up review and reporting on multilingual service implementation details at subsequent meetings.
