Resident urges Elbert County to sponsor Part 150 airport-noise study, cites low-flying training flights

Brenda Deitch, an Elbert County resident, urged the Board of County Commissioners on Dec. 10 to sponsor her reappointment to the Centennial Airport roundtable and to push for a Part 150 airport-noise study covering the county.
"We have 8 flight training boxes over Elbert County alone…They're circling homes. They're harassing livestock," Deitch said, describing months of noise monitoring at her home and saying her ring camera recorded repeated flights. She told commissioners she had filed a report with the Federal Aviation Administration and that discussion at recent roundtable meetings produced momentum for a Part 150 study.
The request matters to many residents, Deitch said, because she believes training flights are occurring at lower elevations than appropriate, causing community disruption and, she alleged, dropping leaded fuel near homes and schools. "I want this to be done. I want them to know how this is impacting our community," she said.
Commissioner Buck thanked Deitch for volunteering on the Centennial Airport roundtable and called her a good representative for the county; he said the county had sponsored her previously and indicated the board would be willing to reappoint her but that the board would discuss formal sponsorship. Chair Commissioner McDaniel acknowledged that flight-training boxes may have been drawn before recent development and said the county should consider moving routes farther east to mitigate community impacts.
Deitch asked the board to consult the county attorney on legal options and whether locally defined 'quiet zone' measures might be available. No formal action or vote was taken at the meeting; the chair asked that the board add formal consideration of roundtable sponsorship to the next agenda so the commissioners can discuss reappointment and any legal or procedural follow-ups.
Next steps: staff will place the sponsorship request on the board’s next agenda for formal consideration and the board indicated it will consult with the county attorney about available options and next steps.
