The Greenland Conservation Commission set Saturday, July 19, for a rain‑garden tour at the school to demonstrate stormwater runoff management and native planting techniques, the commission said at its June 3 special meeting.
The commission decided the event will be a short, standing demonstration rather than a hands‑on build: "We will show how we collect rainwater to water it in the event of severe drought," said a committee member, who described a rain barrel demonstration and plant‑identification tour. Chair noted Pollinator Pathways had confirmed that, because the proposed plants are native, the event could be run as a Pollinator Pathways program: "Evie from Pollinator Pathways said we can have it be a Pollinator Pathways event if we have native plants," the Chair said.
Members discussed logistics and audience: the group tentatively set the time for 10 to 11 a.m., suggested reserving an Easy‑Up for light rain, and weighed kid‑friendly activities such as painting rain barrels. A committee member cautioned that the school's garden is an engineered rain garden with limited space and that plant exchanges should be controlled so only appropriate wet‑tolerant species are used.
Outreach will rely on the commission's email list and Facebook page; one member said the commission's posts are increasingly getting modest interaction and recommended an email blast and a bump on the town page to raise attendance. The commission agreed the meeting will be primarily educational — a short tour and Q&A — and that organizers will confirm the date and details with the presenter, Sally Sewell, before sending formal notices.
The commission will finalize timing and promotional materials ahead of the July date and follow up with the school and Pollinator Pathways to confirm participation.
