Students honored for district STEM fair projects at board meeting

Board members recognized winners and participants in the district STEM fair during a special presentation. John Hopkins, vice principal and STEM fair facilitator at Fernando Rivera Intermediate School, described the Feb. 1 fair as the first in-person display of project boards since COVID and introduced winners from grades TK through eight.
Selected winners announced by Hopkins and invited to speak included Kai Rellitor (Daniel Webster, TK–2 project: "Do cats use their right or left paw more?"), Keilani Blanchfield and Eliana Arcela (FDR, third–fourth grade, hot-air balloon project), Noah (George Washington Elementary, fifth grade, project on osmosis) and Azna Madu (Ben Franklin middle school, germs project). Board members presented certificates of first place, certificates of appreciation and small prizes; trustees praised student work and thanked event organizers.
The board encouraged students and families to remain for the rest of the meeting and praised district staff for restoring in-person exhibition of projects.
No formal board action was required; the presentation concluded with a round of applause for participants.
