District food-service leadership delivered an operational update and fielded extensive trustee questions as the board prepares for a May decision on a multi-year consulting and procurement contract.
Anita King, the district’s general manager of food service, said the district’s 2023–24 meals-claim reimbursement totaled $3,736,710 and that the district claimed 775,213 total meals (breakfast, lunch and supper) with an average of about 4,307 meals served daily. King detailed recent capital and grant-supported purchases—kit funds used for ovens, warmers, refrigerators and transport equipment and Local Food for Schools purchases of locally produced fruit and vegetables—and described central-kitchen operations and staffing.
King also summarized student favorites (chicken Caesar salad, chicken nuggets, pasta, plant-based nuggets) and distribution logistics from the central kitchen. She noted kit-fund awards of $47,637 (2021) and $284,328 (2022) for equipment and training and said some of those funds remain unspent.
Trustees pressed on menu cultural diversity, microwave-safe packaging, and the financial model for upcoming procurement. District administrator Peterson explained the RFP is for consulting and procurement (not vended meals), that two vendors attended the mandatory bid walk and are expected to bid (Sodexo and Chartwells), and that the blended fixed price for consulting/procurement in the RFP is roughly $1.60 to $1.80 per meal (the fixed price does not cover district employees). Peterson said the district previously contributed $100,000–$150,000 annually from the general fund to the child nutrition program pre‑COVID and has run at a surplus in recent years because of federal and state COVID relief funds; staff will present updated financials as grant funds are spent.
Several trustees asked for more student feedback, food-waste data, and clarity on allergy/lactose accommodations. Stephanie Martinez, student services program director, said she is launching broader student surveys and taste-testing events to collect feedback and educational outreach about wellness and food choices.
The board did not take formal action on the update; trustees discussed next steps for the procurement timeline and encouraged staff to solicit diverse vendor options within the constraints of the posted RFP.
