Council approves street closures for Hot‑Glass pop‑ups and art‑walk activations

City Manager Lon Peterson introduced the item and said Ken Page (local business/organizer) and glassblower John Simpson described the concept: portable furnaces on a trailer, artist booths and a staged area similar to vendor demonstrations the community has seen at Victorian Christmas. Simpson said the planned furnace sits on a 5×7 trailer and organizers will set a 14‑foot safety perimeter around the unit.
On event logistics, Simpson said the public experience is free; customers may buy a keepsake cup (price tiers such as $40, $60, $80 or $100) that also covers beverages that evening, and most proceeds would support the Curious Forge and participating businesses. Simpson explained participants will use wristbands and confine alcohol service to restaurant patios; the council sought and received assurances that all participating vendors and artists will carry insurance and sign waivers.
Council members asked detailed safety questions about the furnace and liability. Simpson said organizers will require $1,000,000 in insurance for participants and that vendors will sign the same waiver the Chamber uses; he described staging that keeps the general public outside the 14‑foot safety zone. A resident advised staff to inspect the Curious Forge operation prior to the first event.
Vice Mayor Klein moved approval and Council Member Cece seconded; roll call votes were recorded as yes from Council Member Cece, Council Member Fernandez, Vice Mayor Klein and Mayor Peterson (motion carries 4–0). Council encouraged organizers to report back with lessons learned.
The approved dates include May 2, 2025, and event activations during first‑Friday art walks and fall dates on September 5 and October 10. Staff will coordinate required permits, vendor insurance and safety plans with event organizers prior to the May kickoff.
