The Lynwood Unified School District acknowledged 19 school-level Teachers of the Year and announced Kathleen Thomas as the district Teacher of the Year during the board meeting on May 8.
Carlos Zaragoza and Human Resources staff called winners from each site and invited them to the front for recognition. "These are our top vote getters at each school site for teachers of the year," Zaragoza said while presenting the list. Nominations were drawn from peer and parent comments, and winners represented sites including Mark Twain Elementary, Lindbergh Elementary, Thurgood Marshall Elementary, Cesar Chavez Middle School, Hossler Middle School, Vista High School and Lynwood High School. The district-wide Teacher of the Year was named as Kathleen Thomas.
Board members offered personal remarks of appreciation. Doctor Castro used a point of personal privilege to thank teachers for long hours and dedication; "Thank you, teachers," he said. The board paused for a brief recess after the presentation and invited winners to take photos in the foyer backdrop.
Student board representatives from several high schools also delivered school reports earlier in the meeting highlighting campus events, district wellness efforts and recent athletics achievements. The district continues Teacher Appreciation Week activities and said winners will be celebrated locally at their schools and at district events.
