Summary
Trustees approved K–12 English language arts materials, adopted i-Ready for middle-school math, and approved a restroom contract and fundraising trust while hearing a student-services attendance report and a presentation on Carmel Valley High School.
The Carmel Unified School District Board of Education on Wednesday approved a package of instructional materials for kindergarten through 12th-grade English language arts, adopted a new middle-school math program and carried multiple routine actions, while hearing presentations on Carmel Valley High School and district attendance trends.
Board members voted unanimously to endorse the ELA recommendations from district committees: Magnetic Literacy for K–5, StudySync for grades 6–8, CommonLit360 for grades 9–12 and BFW materials for AP language and literature courses. The board also approved a separate motion to adopt i‑Ready Classroom Mathematics California for grades 6–8.
Those adoptions follow extended review and field testing. Curriculum coordinators Andrew Rodriguez and Karina Donovan told the board the ELA process included site-based pilot testing across grade bands and more than 70 committee-hours of review; elementary pilots ran August 2025–February 2026 and drove a recommendation for Magnetic Literacy. Middle- and high-school committees cited teacher pilots, digital components and student feedback in selecting StudySync and CommonLit360.
In other votes, the board approved a $139,995 contract award to Commercial Solutions Group Inc. for a staff restroom at the Carmel Child Development Center and authorized change orders not to exceed 10 percent of the contract. Trustees also authorized the establishment of an Associated Student Body trust account at Carmel High School to raise and donate funds to the local nonprofit Kids Now; student speaker Juliet Norman described Empty Bowls, a fundraiser scheduled for April 23 from 5–7 p.m.
The board approved a tentative agreement with the Carmel Teachers association to allow, by negotiated option and consistent with Education Code requirements, an evaluation cycle of every five years for eligible permanent certificated employees. Trustees also adopted resolutions recognizing California Day of the Teacher and Classified School Employee Week.
The meeting included an information-only attendance report from Dr. Cassandra Zyskin, director of student services, and a presentation about Carmel Valley High School by Principal Tom Perry and staff. After a closed session on litigation, discipline and negotiations, the board reported it unanimously rejected a tort claim and provided direction on property and negotiations.
