Dr. Michael Engel told the committee the district plans to amend Sodexo’s contract (covering three middle schools and the high school) so Sodexo can administer the State Board of Education Child Nutrition Program grant; a separate amendment would apply to Whitsons (elementary schools and the Howard Middle School production kitchen). Engel said the amendments carry no district cost and are required for state grant participation.
On pricing, Engel reported the USDA reimbursement rates the district uses for comparison: $4.54 for lunch and $2.84 for breakfast. He said vendor meal prices submitted remain below the reimbursable rates and noted a contractual 3% built-in increase for the upcoming year.
Separately, Engel presented vendor quotes for kitchen equipment: Waldo production kitchen at roughly $88,884.28 (unchanged from prior quotes) and East High equipment at about $210,003.05 (approximately $40,000 lower than an earlier estimate). Multiple bids were solicited (five for Waldo, two for East High) and recommended vendors are included in the board packet; installation is expected in late July to early August so equipment is in place before school starts. The committee asked whether that schedule provides enough time; Engel said the timeline is tight but manageable.
These items will be placed on the April 20 full-board agenda for decision.
