The Tuscaloosa City Public Projects committee voted to award the RAS (return activated sludge) pumping improvements contract at the Water Resource Recovery Facility to Mark Johnson Construction for $1,782,906.
Mister Gurney told council the pumps were installed in 1991 and need replacement. He said the project appears on the city's facilities master plan as an item recommended for immediate action and that four bids were received. Gurney said engineering work was funded in FY26 and that the construction award would use remaining WERF Phase 3 funds supplemented by contingency from the 2025 bond to cover the balance.
A council member moved to award the contract and the chair called for a voice vote; the motion passed.
Staff estimated construction would begin late this summer depending on pump lead times and the project would complete in early 2027. The contract award authorizes procurement and project scheduling to proceed.
