Wake Board approves personnel agreements, $30,000 search contract and will return to executive session

The Wake Board of Education on Dec. 4, 2020 approved agenda additions that included employment agreements for Cheryl Heydig as business administrator and board secretary and Darlene Moffitt as chief operating officer, and authorized a $30,000 contract with Comigno Educational Institute to provide superintendent search services. Board members also said the board will return to an executive session to interview additional superintendent candidates and "may take action at the end of the night," the chair said.
The added personnel items included a proposed employment agreement with Cheryl Heydig effective Dec. 2 through June 30, 2025, and an employment agreement with Darlene Moffitt as chief operating officer effective Dec. 2 through June 30, 2025. Staff identified account and PC numbers for recordkeeping and said the approvals are "subject to the review and approval of the Passaic Executive County Superintendent of Schools." A staff member read the recommended action to the board before the vote.
The board also approved a contract for the 2024–25 fiscal year with Comigno Educational Institute "to provide superintendent search services in the amount of $30,000," the recommended action read. The staff member noted the contract amount and that the item was part of the agenda additions before the motion to adopt the revised agenda.
A board member moved to approve the revised agenda, the motion was seconded and the board held a roll-call vote. The recorded votes on the agenda revisions were: Giordano — Yes; LeMandry — Abstain; Paul — Yes; Regaloso — Abstain; Wintick — Abstain; Faber — Yes; Posakos — Yes; Pavlak — Yes. The chair announced the motion carried.
Earlier in the meeting the chair said the board has been "reviewing proposals from various search firms to fill the position of superintendent," that the board had interviewed some candidates in closed session and that it planned to "go back into executive session to interview additional candidates." The chair said the board "may take action at the end of the night."
No members of the public offered comments during the public-comment period. The board noted that comments concerning employees and students cannot be legally responded to by the board and reiterated the three-minute limit for public speakers.
Next steps reflected in the meeting record are the planned return to executive session for additional superintendent interviews and the requirement that the personnel and contract approvals be reviewed by the Passaic Executive County Superintendent of Schools before final implementation.
