Commissioners raise local safety concerns at bus stops, hydrants and truck-stop speed limits; bus-stop item slated for future agenda

Commissioners used the Feb. 13 meeting to raise neighborhood safety issues, from hydrants to bus stops to speed limits.

Commissioner Michael Rizzio said he met with Mission Springs Water District staff and was reassured that regular hydrant inspections, flushing and repairs are performed; he added that the system is robust "unless we have an 8 earthquake" and encouraged residents to report hydrant problems or unauthorized use. He told the commission that Mission Springs provided a detailed breakdown in a presentation and that residents should notify the district of issues.

Rizzio also described resident reports of drug use and vagrancy at local bus stops near grocery stores, saying some commuters—including elderly riders—feel unsafe. He said he notified Chief Henson and asked patrol and homeless-designated officers to monitor the stops. Rizzio said he is coordinating with Councilman Pitts and SunLine to explore restricted hours or curfews and asked staff to add "public safety concerns at local bus stops" to a future agenda; staff confirmed the item will be placed on an agenda without a formal motion.

Finally, Rizzio reported a resident concern that the posted 60 mph speed limit on South Palm Drive in front of the Mavericks truck stop may be unsafe for heavy commercial traffic; he said the city engineer is conducting a citywide speed study and would review any recommended changes.

Commissioners supported placing the bus-stop safety discussion on a future agenda so the commission can examine enforcement, signage and coordination with transit providers.
