Police report: reported Group A crimes fall from 155 to 104 year over year; annex and staffing updates announced

Deputy Police Chief Steven Shaw briefed the Public Safety Commission on Jan. 2025 public-safety metrics and upcoming department projects at the Feb. 13 meeting.
Shaw said the department recorded 104 Group A crimes in January 2025, down from 155 in January 2024. Dispatch logged 2,809 calls during the month; the department reported 61 arrests (compared with 92 in 2024) and issued 179 citations, most of them traffic-related.
Shaw described plans for a new annex adjacent to the police department as part of a broader Public Safety Campus. The annex will include locker rooms, office and desk space for detectives, briefing and training rooms and evidence storage; a preconstruction meeting has been held and the city expects to announce a groundbreaking date soon.
On staffing, Shaw said the department has a new community service officer (Gabriela Camacho), one officer in the phase-2 field-training program and a new dispatcher with a conditional offer pending pre-employment checks; several candidates remain in background processing. Shaw said the department will distribute a 2024 annual report at a future meeting comparing year-over-year trends.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about dispatch location and opportunities to tour facilities; Shaw said dispatch will remain in the current building and that he can provide tours.
