Burlingame issues two proclamations: Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Art Attack's 30th anniversary

At its Oct. 7 meeting the Burlingame City Council presented two proclamations. Melissa Gibbs, manager of CORA's legal services program, accepted a proclamation recognizing October 2024 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and described CORA's 24-hour hotline, two confidential safe houses, legal advocacy, housing assistance and counseling services that served thousands last year. "These proclamations are so critical because it is an opportunity for us to call out a crime that often happens behind closed doors," Gibbs said.
Councilmembers individually thanked CORA and urged residents to use available services. Vice Mayor Stevenson described assisting a woman in need and praised CORA's holistic support.
The council also recognized Nancy Kahl and Art Attack for 30 years of arts instruction in Burlingame. Mayor Colson read a proclamation noting Art Attack's camps, classes and community donations; Nancy Kahl spoke about starting the studio in her garage and expanding to serve generations of students. Several longtime students and parents praised Kahl's teaching and the studio's role in building community.
Both proclamations concluded with a group photo and brief community remarks; no council action was required.
