The Village of Huntley Plan Commission unanimously approved a text amendment on May 13 that adds "Restaurant" as a permitted use in the B-2 Highway Service District, a change staff said is intended to remove a regulatory barrier and help attract new dining options along the Route 47 corridor.
Assistant Director Scott Bernacki told commissioners that permitting restaurants by-right in B-2 is common in other municipalities and that the proposal aligns with the Village's 2022–2025 Strategic Plan goal to make Huntley a location of choice for new and expanding businesses. Bernacki reiterated that defined categories such as "Drive-Thru Food Service" and "Taverns" would continue to require special-use permit approval.
Commissioners asked about the rationale and zoning implications; Bernacki said the amendment is aimed at easing the site-selection process for restaurants by removing the need for a special-use permit in B-2. Commissioners expressed support for the change, with Commissioner Ron Hahn explicitly voicing his support during the discussion.
The motion to approve Petition No. 24-05.03 passed 7-0, with Commissioner Terra DeBaltz moving and Commissioner Dennis O’Leary seconding. The minutes record that Director Charles Nordman later provided a brief update on potential and ongoing developments, and the meeting adjourned at 7:13 p.m.
