The Lenoir City Schools board approved tenure for three teachers and used the April 9 meeting to introduce the new student board representative and share several district announcements.
Doctor Smith recommended tenure for Amy Alexander, Daniel Browning and Felicia Richards, saying the teachers had met state requirements and earned the board’s recognition. “It is my honor every year to recommend some of our outstanding teachers in collaboration with our school principals,” Doctor Smith said. The three teachers were recognized in the meeting and received brief remarks from principals and colleagues praising their contributions to students and building culture.
Chair then called on Principal Jacobin to introduce Jack Fitzgerald as the student representative for the 2026–2027 school year; the student’s term starts Sept. 1. Principal Jacobin noted Fitzgerald watches recorded meetings and will bring a student perspective to the board.
In director remarks, Doctor Smith (speaking in the director’s agenda slot) said the district is updating its five-year strategic plan and is soliciting public feedback via a QR code and the district website; a draft will be presented at an upcoming workshop in a couple of weeks. The director also announced that TCAP/EOC testing begins Monday the 13th and runs through May 8 and asked staff and visitors to observe testing schedules.
Community announcements included the Lenoir City High School plant sale starting Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a Boys & Girls Club wine-and-cheese fundraiser at Avalon Country Club on April 15. The director also announced the passing of Donald Perky, a 43-year Lenoir City Schools veteran who served as principal and superintendent, and noted a reception for retiring long-time girls basketball coach Shelly Collier on May 16; Andy Pennington will become the next girls basketball coach.
The board approved the tenure recommendations by voice vote/motion; members applauded the honorees and paused for recognitions and pictures.
