Council pauses police-oversight appointments after exodus from commission

Councilmember Von Wolpert moved to continue the item and return it to staff, saying the commission has faced “significant challenges” including resignations of the executive director, general counsel, the chair and the vice chair and that the council should “pause and not appoint anyone at this day” until the exit memos were digested. Councilmember Campillo seconded the motion, which the council approved in a recorded vote that was recorded as unanimous 9–0.
The move followed public comment both urging caution and urging reform. Cesar Javier, a frequent public commenter, described concerns about leadership and oversight and urged accountability; Francine Maxwell, who identified herself as calling in, said the public should be included in any changes and encouraged community meetings. Staff confirmed the commission still has a quorum and can continue its work pending any future action by council.
The council thanked the nominees who participated and apologized for the scheduling change. Council members and staff said the continuance is intended to allow time to review the exit memos and determine whether structural changes or additional engagement are needed before new appointments proceed.
Next steps: the item will be returned to staff for additional review; no new hearing date was set during the Jan. 13 meeting.
