The Town of Hope Mills held a recognition at its meeting to honor Commissioner Jerry Lehi for long service to local youth and the community. The Cumberland County chairman presented Lehi with the county seal and a chairman's coin, the Hope Mills fire marshal presented a departmental token of appreciation and the town showed a surprise video from earlier that day in the park.
Mayor (speaker 1) opened the meeting, announced the recognition and noted that Dr. Kimwanna McCray, the town's mayor pro tem, was at home resting and would attend the evening meeting. "We're here to recognize and honor Hope Mills Commissioner Jerry Lehi for his service ... and his 30 years of service with the Hope Mills Youth Association," the mayor said.
The Cumberland County chairman (speaker 2) called Lehi a long-time public servant who "poured into the youth in our community through mentorship, through sports, through coaching," and presented the county seal and chairman's coin in appreciation of Lehi's years on the Hope Mills Board of Commissioners. Fire Marshal Bobby Carter presented a token from the fire department and said, "We thank you, sir," in a brief tribute to Lehi's friendship and service to both the town and the department.
Friends, colleagues and former players took turns at the microphone with personal tributes. One longtime colleague (speaker 6) said Lehi "started me in coaching" and recounted two people he knew who were influenced by Lehi's programs, including one now working for NBC Sports. Lehi responded emotionally, thanking attendees and family members and invoking his faith: "first of all, I'd like to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ for giving me this honor," he said.
Mayor noted donations of three commemorative signs and the posts and graphics from All Signs & Graphics; the town acknowledged the donor's family in attendance. The meeting concluded after routine motions to approve the agenda and to adjourn, with the mayor stating there were no objections and the motions carried.
The recognition highlighted Lehi's long record of service to youth sports programs and the Hope Mills community; Lehi is stepping down from the board in December, and attendees described his influence on generations of players and volunteers.
