Township staff briefed the council on a memorandum of understanding proposed with the school district to use the Hampton community center as an additional shelter and reunification site for the high school during incidents, which could range from water breaks to gas leaks or fires.
Staff said Dr. Rebecca Cunningham approached township staff about the need for a third, indoor reunification option because one of the district's current sites is outdoors and therefore seasonally unsuitable. The school resource officer and the code-enforcement officer/fire marshal have been coordinating with the district about facility flow, egress and student pickup procedures. Staff reported the agreement had been reviewed by "GTN" and was recommended for approval.
Council members asked questions about capacity and logistics; estimates discussed in the meeting ranged from roughly 900 to 1,300 people including staff under various scenarios, and staff said the gymnasium is large and staff and faculty would be present during any event. A preplanned reunification event is expected in the fall when school calendars and weather are more favorable. No formal vote on the MOU was recorded at this meeting.
