City expands senior digital literacy: tablets procured and youth-led training model proposed

The city procured 20 tablets for senior-center deployment and proposed a youth-led training partnership with the county library and FCYC to expand digital-literacy classes and outreach. City staff presented a plan to expand senior digital access and literacy. IT has procured 20 tablets (with charging cabinets) to be deployed to senior centers; staff proposed pairing those devices with training offered in partnership with the Cumberland County Library and a youth-led trainer program (FCYC) so young people can teach seniors basic device navigation and online-safety practices.
Staff emphasized that library-led classes currently run monthly at both senior centers and that the new devices would expand capacity; the proposed approach is to run Saturday sessions while staff conducts a needs survey to determine optimal schedules, transportation barriers and whether additional micro-grants or nonprofit partnerships are needed to scale training. Council asked that the curriculum include internet-safety and scam-avoidance modules targeted to older adults.
Staff will develop an implementation plan and a draft schedule and return with budgetary implications for council consideration alongside the fiscal process.
