West Orange Board of Education elects Brian Rock president, approves reorganization resolutions

The West Orange Board of Education on Jan. 6, 2025 administered oaths to newly elected members, elected Brian Rock as president and Dr. Robert Ifker as vice president, and unanimously approved a package of reorganization resolutions including the board members’ code of ethics.
Board Secretary/meeting staff read the notice required by the New Jersey open public meetings law and confirmed the meeting notice was posted on the district website and sent to the township clerk and local newspapers. The board also announced official Nov. 5, 2024 school-election results: Brian Rock received 7,497 votes, Eric Stevenson received 7,565 votes for a three-year seat, and Deah Bryant received 9,217 votes for an unexpired term.
Oaths of office were administered to the three successful candidates. Brian Rock read the oath and affirmed he met statutory qualifications for the office of board member. Eric E. Stevenson and Deah (Diah) Bryant each also recited the oath and were thanked by the presiding official.
Nominations for board president were opened and Eric Stevenson nominated Brian Rock, a nomination that was seconded. The board conducted a roll-call vote; members present—Dr. Diah Bryant, Dr. Robert Ifker (recorded in the roll call as Ifker/Iffker/Ipker in the transcript), Brian Rock, Eric Stevenson and Miss Vera—voted yes to elect Rock as president.
For vice president, Dr. Robert Ifker was nominated and, after a roll-call vote, was confirmed unanimously as vice president.
The chair highlighted agenda item K, the code of ethics for board members, and the board confirmed that each member had read and received a copy and would return a signed copy to the board secretary to be kept on file. The board then moved to approve the reorganization resolutions listed as items D through R; the motion was seconded, no discussion followed, and the roll-call vote approved the resolutions unanimously.
The board opened the floor for public comment, allowed three minutes per speaker as stated, and—finding no one at the podium—closed public comment.
President Rock thanked his colleagues for their support and congratulated members on their elections. The board set its next regular meeting for Jan. 27, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. in the West Orange High School Library Media Center and stated it would not hold an executive session after that meeting. A motion to adjourn was moved, seconded and approved.
Actions taken at the meeting were procedural and limited to organizational matters. No policy adoptions beyond the acknowledgment and filing of the code of ethics copy were recorded during the session.
