At a public hearing the Atwater City Council confirmed itemized abatement costs for the property at 1265 High Street, a structure built in 1935 that the city said had been under enforcement since 2019.
Daniel Garcia, the city’s code enforcement manager, presented the history and cost breakdown, noting the structure sustained significant fire damage on Nov. 23, 2024, and was posted as dangerous in December 2024. Garcia said the city executed an abatement warrant and the structure was demolished Feb. 27 and 28, 2025. The total amount for abatement services, city department labor and outstanding fines and fees was reported as "just under $60,000." Garcia also said the property had generated more than 120 police calls for service between 2019 and the posting of the property as unsafe.
With no public speakers on the item, a motion to confirm the costs was made and seconded; the council approved the motion on roll call.
Council members thanked staff for resolving the long-running case and noted similar problem properties remain under review.
