The Board of Selectmen approved the purchase of a small riverfront parcel at 311 Roosevelt Drive for $20,700, the assessed value presented by town staff. Officials said owning the property — which contains an existing boat ramp — would allow the fire/rescue department to launch and store a larger rescue boat locally rather than transporting it to Derby for launches.
Selectmen discussed why other town parcels would not work for the rescue boat. One member noted the town owns a very small river parcel at 285 Roosevelt Drive but said the opening is not wide enough and improvements there would likely cost more than the purchase price of the 311 parcel. A former fire chief on the board said the dedicated access at 311 Roosevelt Drive is valuable for emergency response.
The motion to purchase the parcel carried by recorded voice vote and the chair announced the motion carried (4-0).
