New trustees sworn in; Shruti Kumar affirmed board president and committee assignments set

The New Haven Unified Board of Education sworn in newly elected trustees and immediately moved to organize for the 2024–25 year, affirming Shruti Kumar as board president and confirming officers and committee assignments.
At the start of the meeting, trustees completed ceremonial oaths of office for newly elected members, including Michael Gonzalez, Melanie (self-identified during the oath) and Patricio Irby Jr. Joe Angelus, introduced as NH NHTA president, praised the new board makeup as a moment of "pivotal change in the district," noting the mix of teachers, parents and community members now serving.
Following the swearing-in, the board followed its rotation policy and moved to affirm Shruti Kumar as board president; the motion was seconded and approved with all in favor. The board likewise affirmed Trustee Raffae as vice president and confirmed a nominated board clerk after establishing the rotation order and noting that one newly elected trustee asked to be withdrawn from consideration for clerk.
The board reviewed and assigned trustees to standing committees, including the Alameda County School Boards Association (ACFA), Mission Valley Regional Occupational Program (MVROP/MBROP), the district's communication and advocacy committee, Finance, Technology and Facilities, Policy Review, the New Haven Schools Foundation and the SELPA regional policy board. Staff recommended removing committees that have not been meeting, including the California Interscholastic Federation item, and trustees volunteered as primaries and alternates during the discussion.
The superintendent was appointed as secretary of the board by motion and vote. Board members also recognized outgoing president Michael Gonzalez with a certificate and small gift; board members publicly thanked Gonzalez and his family for his service.
The board confirmed committee assignments and officer selections by motion; the meeting then proceeded to routine calendar and governance items.
The meeting closed with an invitation to a reception honoring the new and returning trustees.
