Parent asks PVPUSD board to speed yearbook probe; superintendent says outside investigator will be expedited

A parent who identified himself as Jeremy Vanderhall used public comment on Oct. 9 to press the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified board for transparency about a summer‑months yearbook investigation and to warn of rising antisemitism in schools and social media.

"In the days, weeks, and months that followed, the world witnessed an alarming increase in antisemitism," Vanderhall said, calling on the district to address concerns openly and "bring this issue out of the shadows." He said he and other community members who want prompt answers have received no substantive update since raising questions at earlier meetings.

Superintendent Dr. Serrano responded during the superintendent's report that the investigation is progressing and that he has asked the outside investigator assigned by the district's legal counsel to expedite the work so the board can hold a public review and consider any needed policy implications. "I do expect that we'll be able to put this on the agenda soon," he said, adding that students at Peavey High School had separately decided not to include editorials in this year's yearbook.

Trustees heard public concerns about both the handling of the matter and the need to protect students and community safety. The board did not take formal action on the investigation at the Oct. 9 meeting; Dr. Serrano said staff aim to bring an item for public discussion once the investigator's work allows it.

Next steps: Superintendent's office will seek to accelerate the outside investigation and schedule a public agenda item for board review when appropriate.
