Representative Eric Muckey (District 15) told the committee the LOI is intended “to provide data and information on those two programs dating back for the past three fiscal years” and to clarify the relationship between the USDA and the Department of Education in program delivery. Jennifer Staley, speaking for Feeding South Dakota, thanked the committee for the opportunity to provide information and said the review would help the organization “better understand how we can partner with the Department of Education to maximize food availability and distribution.”
Representative Kasin moved a do-pass recommendation, seconded by Senator Vojta; the committee voted in favor and the LOI passed. The motion recorded a committee vote in favor with the chair announcing the motion as passed.
The LOI asks agencies to prepare historical program data and a cooperative presentation for a future committee meeting to inform potential statutory or budgetary adjustments. The committee did not take any immediate funding action; the vote advances only the letter of intent and a data-gathering process. The committee indicated the presentation will follow later in the session schedule.
