Facilities update: ComEd assessment could unlock grants; Krug sewer issue largely resolved

Facilities staff told the Aurora East USD 131 Buildings and Grounds Committee on April 12 about a ComEd-sponsored facility-assessment program that the district can use at no direct cost. The staff member described the program as energy-focused and said it could produce the assessments required to qualify for grant funding to offset HVAC and other energy project costs.
"With this program, if we woulda had this assessment done... we could have possibly qualified for grants for a couple $100,000 that might offset some of our phase 2 expense," the staff member said, noting the assessment is paid for by taxes on ComEd bills and would involve on-site visits.
On Krug Elementary, staff said earlier sewer problems appear to be resolved after work with an external plumber removed a residual clog. Some asphalt and landscaping touch-ups remain pending when weather allows. Staff also said they will reinforce education for students and staff to avoid flushing inappropriate materials.
Operational notes: work orders "ebb and flow" but are currently in a lull; crews used spring break to complete several jobs. Staffing remains short two positions; staff reported one candidate expected to start before the next meeting and one vacancy still under recruitment.
Next steps: staff recommended pursuing the ComEd assessment to strengthen grant eligibility and will follow up on Krug cosmetic repairs and staffing updates at future meetings.
