Council orders abatement on four properties in wildland-urban interface

The Town Council adopted a resolution ordering abatement of vegetation on four properties identified in an updated staff attachment as noncompliant with the town's Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) defensible-space requirements. Nicole Burnham, Director of Parks & Public Works, explained that County Fire administers the program on the town's behalf and that the staff report initially identified 12 noncompliant properties; eight had been cleared prior to the hearing and four remained on the updated list.
Burnham told the council that if the properties remain noncompliant after reinspection, County Fire will perform vegetation removal and staff will return in August to adopt a resolution authorizing assessment of abatement costs and administrative fees against the properties. Councilmember Badami moved to order abatement of the properties in Attachment 5 and to direct staff to work with County Fire on outreach to properties that did not receive earlier hearing notices; Vice Mayor Moore seconded. The motion passed on a unanimous roll call.
The council and County Fire staff discussed whether multiple properties on Francis Oaks Way were owned by the same person; staff later confirmed they are separate owners with different violations. Council asked staff to coordinate outreach to properties that had not been included in tonight's hearing due to notice issues.
